Gum grafting is a type of gum surgery that involves taking a tissue sample from one area of the mouth and grafting it onto the gum line. There are three main types of gum grafting:
Connective Tissue Graft
First, a skin flap is made on the roof of the mouth. Then, the tissue sample is taken from underneath the skin flap and grafted to the gums.
Free Gingival Graft
This is similar to a connective tissue graft, except that there is no need to cut a skin flap. The tissue is taken straight from the roof of the mouth.
Pedicle Graft
A skin flap is made from the gum line and pulled over so that the root is covered. Sutures are then used to hold it in place.
